North Lanarkshire Befriending Project
Young people, families, volunteers, and the wider community benefit from the North Lanarkshire Befriending Project which is delivered by national charity Volunteering Matters. Befriending offers Young Carers (aged 8-18) vital and bespoke emotional, social, and practical support, helping to reduce feelings of isolation and stress. NLBP provides a safe space for expressing emotions, fosters friendships, and encourages participation in leisure and wellbeing activities outside their caregiving role, with the support of a dedicated volunteer. NLBP offers Young Carers the opportunity of respite breaks, builds self-esteem, and helps develop coping strategies which can improve health and wellbeing. By strengthening independence and offering guidance, befriending can also alleviate family pressures, improve relationships, and connect Young Carers with additional resources and support, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
